The LEGO Ideas range is a fantastic concept from LEGO. Ideas for new sets are proposed and voted on by fans. When a set gets 10,000 votes within a certain timeframe, it goes into review and LEGO produce the set. 

That is exactly what happened here. The LEGO Ideas 21301 Birds Model Kit comes from British gardener and bird enthusiast Thomas Poulsom, who designed this wonderful set that received incredible support from LEGO fans worldwide. 

The set includes 3 replica birds from around the world, each presented on its own individual stand. The blue jay represents North America; the robin represents Europe and the hummingbird represents South America. The 3 birds make a beautiful, striking set.

Is The LEGO Ideas 21301 Birds Model Kit Worth Buying?

Firstly, it should be recognised that the LEGO 21301 Birds Model Kit is exactly what it says, a model kit. 

While there is tremendous fun to be had from the building of these birds, they are designed to be models that make stunning standalone features, not toys to be played with. This is further recognised by the difficulty and age guidance provided by LEGO, who suggest ages 12 and up. 

That being said, keen LEGO enthusiast from the ages of 10 and up could enjoy building the Birds Model Kit, once they know that there is little play to be had when assembled. 

Assembly is not too difficult, although it does require some patience as it can be challenging at times for those unfamiliar with more advanced LEGO building techniques. The set includes 580 pieces, and the three birds can be assembled simultaneously. This means all three can be displayed alongside each other in an impressive display. 

The time taken for assembly really depends on level of expertise. Some very experienced LEGO users could have all three models constructed within 90 minutes. Younger users could easily take twice as long.

Of particular note is the size of the three completed birds. The hummingbird is the smallest, yet still stands 5 inches tall from base stand to tip. This elevation allows the birds to really stand out, and they strike an impressive figure on a stand or mantelpiece. Similarly, the colors are vivid and bright. This is even more noticeable for the hummingbird, which comes with a scaled yellow flower that the hummingbird appears to be approaching for nectar. 

While younger children will not get much benefit from the LEGO Ideas 21301 Birds Model Kit, wildlife enthusiasts, older children and LEGO model fans will love it. The assembly is just challenging enough to balance difficulty with reward, and the instructions are clear and concise. This is one of the most popular sets to come out of the LEGO Ideas program, and it's easy to see why. 

The Bachmann Trains Santa Fe Flyer Scale Train Set is a HO scale train set from world renowned train set makers Bachmann. It comes with 12 curved track pieces that make up a 36 inch curved track, and is electric powered. 

The set includes an EMD FT diesel powered locomotive model with fully functioning headlight, two freight cars and an off center caboose bringing up the rear. 

The set is a HO scale, 1:24, and is not designed as a young child's toy, but as a more delicate model train set ideal for older children and model train set collectors alike.

Is the Bachmann Trains Santa Fe Flyer HO Scale Train Set Worth Buying?

Although many reviews and sellers list the ideal age of the Santa Fe Flyer Train set as ages 8 and up, Bachmann insist that the set is designed for those aged 14 and over. 

This is because of the delicate nature of the Santa Fe Flyer set, and the fact that it is a HO scale model. Although Bachmann claim that the set can be set up in ten minutes, the reality is that it is more likely to take over an hour to properly set up the track and trains so that they run smoothly and consistently.

Although the trains and track are, for the most part, well made, they can need some adjusting. Some wheels will need a drop of oil or a stretching out so that they roll smoothly, and the track does not click together as you might imagine from the description. 

This further illustrates the point that this is not suitable as a child's toy without extensive adult supervision. Young children can certainly enjoy the Santa Fe Flyer when it has been assembled and set up for them to use, but they should not be asked to set it up on their own. To do so is asking for trouble.
