No Stress Chess Review

22/2/2015

Picture
One of Winning Moves Games' biggest sellers since its launch in 2004, No Stress Chess is an introductory chess game that teaches the basic moves of chess through a simple yet innovative gameplay system.

The aim is simple; slowly learn the basic legal moves of the various pieces, and gradually build up your knowledge until you have the ability to play a real game. Although primarily aimed at children aged 7-12, parents of children as young as 4 have spoken highly of the game, while many adults use it as a practical learning tool to teach themselves how to play!

The board has two sides; one side has a regular chess board and the other has a learning board. The learning board labels the pieces' positions, and is played with action cards, which dictate what piece the player moves and how the piece can move. This novel approach allows players to learn at their own pace.

For someone who has never played chess before, No Stress Chess offers a unique training guide that allows players to learn the basic fundamentals of chess piece movement. In the training mode, players take turns drawing action cards from a deck. On each action card is a chess piece, a diagram of that piece's legal movements, and written instructions of the movement.

For example, the King card has a picture of the King piece, a diagram of the piece on the board with arrows indicating legal movement, and an explanation which states 'You can move me one square in any direction'. The player must move the piece that is on the card. If they cannot, they forfeit their turn.

This method of learning chess makes an awful lot of sense. It does not get bogged down in strategy, but rather allows children to learn the fundamentals of each piece. A sure sign of progression is when children can say what card they are hoping to draw, as they can see a good move on the board. When comfortable with all the moves, children can progress to drawing three action cards at a time, and choosing whichever one they think is best. Eventually, they can turn the board over and play a real game without the cards.

What makes No Stress Chess such a good learning tool is that it restricts both players. It can be difficult teaching a child to play chess without beating them too easily, as children can often tell when you are letting them win. Playing with the restriction of drawing cards means adults are limited in their movement, and a more even game can be played.

No Stress Chess will not teach your child about strategy, opening combinations or sneaky en passant movements, but it will give them a solid understanding of the game from which they can progress. As a learning tool, and as an introduction to chess, it is one of the best chess games on the market.

UDI RC 2.4 GHz 6 Axis Gyro Quadcopter Review

22/2/2015

Picture
The UDI RC 2.4 GHz 6 Axis Gyro Quadcopter is one of the most popular remote control copters on the market today. UDI are a big name in RC copters, and much is expected of their drones.

The 6 Axis Gyro Quadcopter is marketed as a great starter copter for those who don't have a huge amount of experience flying drones of any type. It has auto-stabilization to help beginners keep control of the quad, and although it is incredibly light at just over 4 ounces, its lightweight design is extremely robust.

Unlike many other quadcopters, the UDI 6 Axis Gyro Quad will take quite a beating, so you don't have to worry about it breaking down after one small crash. Taking into account the price, which is considerably cheaper than many of its competitors, is there any reason you shouldn't buy it?

Is the UDI RC 2.4 GHz 6 Axis Gyro Quadcopter Worth Buying?

When it comes to any kind of remote control quad or helicopter, the acid test is sturdiness. All too often, a first crash can cause irreparable damage. Thankfully, this is not a problem with the UDI 6 Axis RC Quadcopter. It is made of extremely lightweight material, but this allows a good level of bend and give in the frame, so small crashes will cause it little to no damage.

Additionally, when the quad goes out of range or is running low on battery power, it will gently glide itself down to the ground. These make it an ideal starter quad for those who want to learn on an agile, powerful machine that will let you learn from your mistakes. On top of all that, it is extremely good value for money. Don't be fooled by the price - you are getting a whole lot of quad for your money.

The controller is also nice and intuitive to use, once you get the hang of it. It has an LCD display which shows a few neat stats, such as throttle and camera status, and also includes a 360 inversion button so you can show off to friends. It would be nice if the controller display actually showed you a live feed of the camera, but to be fair, there's only so much you can expect from such a reasonably priced quad.

It needs mentioning that the instruction manual is dreadful. It has been badly translated, and that term is used loosely, from Chinese to English. Thankfully, there isn't much set up involved, and there are countless user submitted videos online should you run into trouble with any particular aspect. Buyers should also be aware that, because of its lightweight design, the UDI 6 Axis Gyro Quad will be difficult to fly in strong winds. These, however, are minor issues, and should not detract from what is genuinely an excellent value for money quadcopter.

Is the Learning Resources Farmers Market Colour Sorting Set Worth Buying?

The first thing you will notice when you open the Farmers Market Colour Sorting Set is just how vibrant and colourful the pieces are. Made from plastic, the fruit and veg pieces are of good quality. There is some give in the soft plastic, and they are unlikely to cause any damage if stood on or thrown around the room. The buckets are made of much stronger stuff, and give children a good contrast of the hard wooden bucket and the soft fruit.

What is most pleasing about this toy is not only that it teaches children about colours, but that it does so by teaching them of new fruits and vegetables. Children are inquisitive, and they will want to know exactly what food they are playing with. Apples, bananas and carrots might not need any introduction, but what about plums, apricots or pumpkins? Getting children interested in healthy food is something many parents are desperate to achieve, and the Learning Resources Farmers Market does it in a fun and interesting way.

Is there anything that could be improved upon? Perhaps. The set includes a green, yellow and orange pepper. Having the same food in different colours is not a problem, but that could be achieved with 2 of the same food, allowing the introduction of an additional piece. It also wouldn't do any harm to have the bottom of the buckets coloured to match their colour label. That being said, this is an easy fix; stick a coloured piece of paper to the bottom of the bucket.

All things considered, the Learning Resources Farmers Market Colour Sorting Set is a wonderful addition to play time. It encourages experimentation with food, teaches children about new healthy fruits and vegetables, and teaches children to distinguish by colour. Whether your child wants to pour the fruit from one bucket to the next, or wants to set up their own farmer's market for paying customers, this will do the job. Playing with your food has never been this much fun.

JOOLA Midsize Table Tennis Table Review

22/2/2015

Picture
JOOLA are known the world over as one of the premier manufacturers of all things table tennis related, and much is expected of all of their products. Their full sized table tennis tables are almost beyond reproach, but what of their scaled down versions?

The Midsize Table Tennis Table is a compact yet sturdy alternative to a full sized table, aimed at those for whom space is limited. At 71 inches long and 36 inches wide, the table is approximately 2/3 the size of a regulation table tennis table. It stands 30 inches tall, the same as a regulation table, and the two sides of the table separate and fold down flat for easy storage.

  • Mid-Sized Table: Approximately 2/3 full size
  • Weight: Approximately 60 pounds

Is the JOOLA Midsize Table Tennis Table Worth Buying?

First and foremost, the JOOLA Midsize Table Tennis Table is well made, as you would expect from any JOOLA product. It feels reassuringly stable, which is not something you can say about many midsized ping pong tables on the market. The playing surface is around 5/8ths of an inch thick, and offers good action with a strong bounce.

Assembly is a doddle; extend the legs on each table end, clamp together the two ends and attach the net provided. It really couldn't be simpler. Similarly, the table separates and folds down readily, allowing simple storage under a bed or flat against a back wall.

For those that have never played on a midsize table tennis table before, there is a short period of adjustment. First time users often comment that many of their shots go long for the first half an hour or so as they get used to the smaller dimensions. This has the added impact that full speed power rallies are going to be more difficult to achieve. However, it does not take long for your mind to adjust to the shorter length, and extended use will lead to far more control of your shots when you do play on a full size table. Full sized tables can also be quite daunting for children trying to pick up table tennis for the first time. In this regard, the JOOLA Midsize Table is perfect for introducing children to the game, and letting them learn the basics.

Some buyers have commented that the packaging on the corners of the JOOLA Midsize Table Tennis Table is lacking, so do take care when unpacking it. It should also be noted that the table does not come with table tennis bats (paddles) or table tennis balls, so you will need to pick them up as well. However, these are minor issues, and they are the only ones worth mentioning. For table tennis players desperate to own their own table but with limited space at home, the JOOLA Midsize Table Tennis Table is worth serious consideration.

Skip Hop Treetop Friends Activity Gym Review

22/2/2015

Picture
The Skip Hop Treetop Friends Activity Gym is a delightful and fun filled activity gym for babies from newborn and up. Featuring 17 developmental activities and 5 hanging toys that can hang from a choice of 13 loops, there is always something to keep your baby engaged.

With multiple textures, sounds, and nature inspired designs, the Skip Hop Treetop Activity Gym is not only one of the most activity packed gyms on the market, but one of the most beautifully designed. The colours and graphics are smooth and simple, and manage to carry off a certain elegance that you just don't get with many activity gyms.

With removable bars and a tummy time pillow included, is there any reason you shouldn't choose the Treetop Activity Gym?

Is the Skip Hop Treetop Friends Activity Gym Worth Buying?

The mat itself is a cotton-poly blend that has several different textures and fabrics for babies to investigate. Some of these textures are particularly nicely done; the leaves are satisfyingly crinkly and squeezing the flower results in a pleasant squeak, both of which parents have reported to be very popular. Many activity gyms offer bright flashing lights and loud songs and music. While these do have their place, the Skip Hop Treetop Activity Gym feels like a calmer alternative.

There is a choice of 5 hanging toys, and these can be hung on any of the 13 loops on the bars. These toys are of a high quality, and consist of a chiming owl, a mirrored apple, a tweeting bird, a squirrel, and a crinkly winged rattle bird. The bars are detachable, and the extra loops also allow for additional toys to be hung if available. The mat itself is machine washable, but make sure to remove the mirror before doing so. Some parents have suggested removing the bars when using the mat for tummy time. A tummy time pillow is included, and while it is far from the main selling point of the Treetop Activity Gym, it is certainly a welcome addition.

With its beautiful design and numerous activities, the Skip Hop Treetop Activity Gym is a firm favourite for parents and babies alike. If there is one thing that could be improved upon, it is that the base mat could be thicker. It is slightly thin, and can feel somewhat hard when placed directly on a hardwood floor. Another inch of thickness would be perfect. However, this is a minor flaw, and one barely worth mentioning. If you are in the market for an activity gym, the Skip Hop Treetop should be top of the shortlist.
