Produced by Fantasy Flight Games, Star Wars Imperial Assault is worth the upper-mid-level purchase price compared to other board games if just for the incredibly detailed and paintable miniature figures. They truly are worthwhile Star Wars collectibles in and of themselves.
The game uses the same high quality card stock that Star Wars fans will remember from the X-Wing Miniatures Game Core Set. Parents may balk at the slightly higher than mid-level price tag for a board game. But every high-quality element is here for long-lasting play with virtually limitless game play scenarios and possibilities
Eleven 6 sided dice are included, as is support for 2 to 5 players. The map tiles and cardboard tokens are also thick and high quality. Game play is based on Descent: Journeys in The Dark Second Edition. However, there are plenty enough improvements and unique takeoffs that this does not feel like a rehash of that experience.
This officially licensed Star Wars board game/collectible puts you in the middle of the Galactic Civil War. The time frame is after the destruction of the Death Star over Yavin 4, pitting the Rebel Alliance against the evil Galactic Empire. In campaign mode, a single player controls the unlimited armies of the Galactic Empire, combating up to 4 Rebel Alliance players.
The unique nature of the game combines both a board game and physical figure combat game. As mentioned above, multiple expansion packs are available. However, they are not needed.
The game includes the following miniatures:
- 2 x nexu cats
- 9 x storm troopers
- 3 x Imperial officers
- 4 x trandoshans
- 3 x probe droids
- 6 x rebel heroes
- 4 x Imperial guards
- 2 x e-webs
- 1 x AT-ST
Whether played as a cooperative campaign game or a simple skirmish, the Star Wars Imperial Assault game includes a lot of features that make it a "must-have" purchase for Star Wars collectors and strategic, tactical combat board game fans.
